2018 was an absolute cracker - we shot some incredible weddings and met some truly wonderful people.

The people after all, are what make a wedding amazing. Details, decorations and venues are all fab, but nothing, absolutely nothing can beat the chemistry, emotions and moments created by great people. Anyways, less talk, more pics - here are a few of our faves from the year!

The golden hour https://www.realitypaused.com/blog/2018/1/the-golden-hour

The golden hour

The golden hour. Pretty much THE best time to take photos. Period.

When it comes to weddings, this 'hour' is when the magic happens.

Why I hear you ask?

Well...as the sun dips towards its final dance over the horizon, the light literally turns gold, painting everything around it with soft romantic beams. Perfect for some couple photos!

Whilst the majority of our photography is purely documentary - it's during this period that we'll look to borrow you newlyweds for 15 minutes or so. This is when we can create some of those all important wall hangers!

When does it happen?

The golden 'hour' is figurative, and totally depends on the weather, and time of year. But it will typically happen on the hour leading up to the sun setting. We'll be keeping an eye on the light throughout the day, ready to grab the opportunity.

What do you have to do?

Well...nothing really. We'll keep an eye out, and if we spot an opportunity, we'll have already scouted out the best locations. But...sometimes it may involve a dash for a clear horizon! Over the years, along with our couples, we've legged it out of venues, hiked across fields and climbed over fences, just to get to the best light. And boy was it worth it!

Honestly though, golden hour couple shots are never mandatory - we'll always shape the photography to what you want. But, if we spot some lovely light, or a beautiful sunset, we'll promise we'll give you the option. That might mean jumping outside in-between desserts and speeches (seriously, we did that last year! Ha!), but it means you always have the choice, and it might just be the moments we get your best couple shots!

Do you fancy getting involved in golden hour? If so - hit us up at butterflyeffect@mail.com - we'd love to hear your wedding plans!

5 top tips for a sparkler exit https://www.realitypaused.com/blog/2018/1/5-top-tips-for-a-sparkler-exit

5 top tips for a sparkling exit

Are you planning on having sparklers at your wedding to create some memorable images?

If so, great stuff - here are a few top tips for how to get the best out of them!

1. Check with your venue first

Most venues will be totally cool with sparkler exits, so long as you check with them first about where they are comfortable with them happening. Oh - and let us know before the wedding too - we can then plan for the best place to get the pictures come dusk on your wedding day.

2. Go long!

Sparklers come in different sizes. Trust us, its worth those few extra pennies on getting the longest ones you can. Regular sparklers burn fast = no time for lots of photos. So, the bigger they are, the more beautiful we can make the pictures, yay! We say 'go big' every time :D

3. Be ready to make a dash outside

We'll keep an eye on the fading light and make sure we get everything ready for the moment. The best time for sparklers is at dusk - so when it's time, we'll encourage you and your guests outside as quickly as possible to capture the shots. Usually it'll only take about ten minutes, so everyone can then get back to the party!

4. Take it slow...

When you walk down the 'sparkling tunnel,' it's important to take it slowly - it means you can enjoy the moment, and enables us to be able to focus the camera perfectly in these low light conditions. No need to rush, just take it all in!

5. Go with the flow!

Forget about us, forget about the pictures and just embrace the emotion. This is a wonderful moment, everyone is cheering and having fun - we love it when couples interact with their guests. They dance, smile, kiss - whatever takes you! It's about keeping it real, and we bloomin' love that.

Like what you see? we hope so! If you do - get in touch with us at butterflyeffect@mail.com so we chat about the plans for your big day!

Stoke Mill Wedding Photography // Charlotte + Will https://www.realitypaused.com/blog/2017/12/stoke-mill-wedding-photography---charlotte-will

"As soon as we met them, we knew they were right for us - calm, relaxed and passionate about their work. On our wedding day, this passion came through and they were just as excited to get the best shots. When our photos came through they surpassed all our expectations and we are so pleased with them. Thank you guys for creating some special pictures for us which we can now look back on for years to come!"

Ah what a lovely way to round of the 2017 season - with this gorgeous wedding, and these two wonderful people.

When we met Charlotte and Will at Stoke Mill, we chatted through the importance of getting those all important wall hangers - all we needed now was a kind helping of weather throughout the day...

My word...did the heavens open - from the church service onwards it bucketed it down, and by the time we got to Stoke Mill it was hailing!!

Did that bother Charlotte and Will - did it heck. They just got on with it, and let us get on with capturing all the wonderful emotions going on through the day. Mind you, we were both still hugging the windows during dinner, looking for any break in the weather. And, just when it never looked possible, we were literally treated to ten minutes (I swear on the kids lives!), ten minutes of blazing sunshine in-between main course and dessert. Boom!

Cue a scramble outside by us four to make the most of this treat and boy were we lucky. Shortly after being inside the weather changed again, and we all danced away the night.

Oh, hang on- did I mention THE BEST ever best man's speech I've ever heard! Seriously, this guy wins hands down - singing the whole speech to Disney Frozen's"Let it go".

It. Bought. The. House. Down.

Literally.

I'm not even sure the pictures do his speech justice - but take a look for yourselves and let me know what you think!

Norwich Cathedral Wedding Photography // Victoria + Aaron https://www.realitypaused.com/blog/2017/12/norwich-cathedral-wedding-photography---victoria-aaron

"Oh my bloody God, I'm crying my eyes out. It's just incredible...stunning, amazing! I genuinely can't say the words to give them justice. God, I'm so incredibly gobsmacked at the beauty. THANK YOU SO SO MUCH!!!!"

D'ya know what, I don't think we've even seen a couple any smilier on their wedding day than these two. Totally happy, absolutely besotted. Trust me, you could feel it all around ya.

There's hardly a frame without a smile in it, and we bloody loved that! And as for mother of the bride, what a legend, had us in fits from 8am onwards!!

Victoria and Aaron got married at Norwich Cathedral, so we stuck around for while after the reception with just us four and the wedding film makers Peter and David (Dreamcapture - thoroughly lovely chaps!) to make the most of this stunning place.

Southwood Hall followed, and that never disappoints either - beaut of a venue we've been lucky enough to shoot at twice this year, and for the second time in a row we finished with a lovely sparkler exit!

Seriously though, what a day this was. Victoria and Aaron = the best of human kind.

Feast your eyes on this...

Sprowston Manor Wedding Photography // Kerry + Marc https://www.realitypaused.com/blog/2017/12/sprowston-manor-wedding-photography---kerry-marc

"Great guys, totally laid back who were willing to go with what we wanted for your special day! Capturing the whole day is their aim, and that's exactly what they did. They love an opportunity to get a big shot and for us it was sunset! Such hard workers who totally made us feel at ease!"

Banger of a wedding this one, rounded off by one of those big beautiful Norfolk skies. Mind you - we did have to leg it to the closest field, hop over a fence (fist pump Kerry who never wavered at hopping fences to get to a clear horizon) to make it there literally just in time for some of that golden light.

Big up to Mike Savory too - the first time we've shot alongside this very talented wedding film maker (check him out here www.mikesavory.co.uk) and it was an absolute blast.

It's the first time we've shot Sprowston - plenty of banter amongst the guests, Bill Downs singing for the ceremony and the drinks reception, and a first dance with their little girl to melt any parents heart. Seriously, I think their little girl nearly stole the show, proper little cutie!

Anyhow, enough chatter from us...here's a quick wrap up of their day :D

The Great Hospital Wedding Photography // Sarah + Ross https://www.realitypaused.com/blog/2017/12/the-great-hospital-wedding-photography---sarah-ross

"You were amazing from start to finish - you connected with everyone so well and everyone thought you were awesome - you captured some amazing moments - we loved our highlights reel as well as all the high resolution images, delivered direct to our door! Highly recommend butterflyeffect!"

We've never shot at The Great Hospital before, and until Ross asked us to photograph his wedding, I don't think we even realised it was a wedding venue - and what a venue too!

The smallest cloisters in the UK, a grand hall of the sorts you'd see royal banquets and a backdrop sporting the finest building on Norwich's skyline. Perfection - if you're looking for a wedding venue - be sure to check this one out!!

Sarah and Ross got married in the beautiful Santorini, so I was honoured to be able to capture the home leg with all their closest family and friends. What an afternoon it was as well - beautiful sunshine, plenty of banter and some amazing speeches that bought the house down!

Here's a few from the day...

Southwood Hall Wedding Photography // Robyn + Seb https://www.realitypaused.com/blog/2017/12/southwood-hall-wedding-photography---robyn-seb

“That slideshow was literally incredible. I’ve just sent it to my bridesmaids – they’ve all cried and said how fabulous you both were. In fact one’s words were ‘those two men were f##king incredible!’ Thanks you two, you’ve just been amazing.”

Looking back through these pics makes me chuckle - and chuckle lots!  Such a large number of frames are filled with laughter - that absolute belly kinda laugh as well :D

That's how we'll remember this day I reckon - one hell of a bubbly couple and a legendary mix of friends and family, with all the banter that could be squeezed into one single day.

Touch paper = Lit. And the rest followed in fine form. Nominated chefs carving at each table, dancing on the patio to live music as the sun went down, a huge bouncy castle assault course for kids (yeh right!!) and a sparkler exit late into the night.

Another Southwood Hall spectacular, that delivered on every level. Here's a few faves from the day...

North Norfolk Wedding Photography // Laura + George https://www.realitypaused.com/blog/2017/12/north-norfolk-wedding-photography---laura-george

"We couldn't have had better photographers for our wedding day. From first meeting them we knew just how relaxed we would be to have them there on our special day. From start to finish they were easy to talk to, creative and outgoing. Throughout the day it was lovely to be able to get to know them and they both built fantastic rapport with our wedding guests! We would recommend them to anyone and would also use them again (it's a shame we can't get married again!!) The quality and quantity of our photos are amazing and I'm so pleased we picked these two guys to be a part of it. Thanks Darren and Kristian!"

Bloody mint this wedding. And so are these two. I love how they did everything themselves, exactly how they wanted it, and even though we had severely dark skies and threatening drizzle, we were rewarded with a dry evening and a beaut of a golden hour. Cue a scramble through the hedge into the corn field next door! Love North Norfolk and its unique micro climate :D

Mind you, I did nearly die during the welly wanging championships, but all worth it for the laughs (and the pic!). Outdoor games, hog roast and dancing late into the night in the mix for the win thereafter!

Feast your eyes on this...

Holkham Hall Wedding Photography // Katrina + Patrick https://www.realitypaused.com/blog/2017/11/holkham-hall-wedding-photography---katrina-patrick

"Thank you Darren, Kristian, lovely photos! All our guests have commented on how relaxed and great you guys were. It was a lovely day and we achieved the right mix we were looking for. Great memories!"

What beautiful humans these two are! I've worked with Patrick on a few projects in the past as part of my marketing job, so for Katrina and Patrick to choose us as their wedding photographers was an absolute honour!

We'd never photographed at Holkham Hall before, and if I'm totally honest, I didn't even realised they had a secret temple tucked away in the woodland until we met up for a recce before the wedding. This stunning little 18th Century folly was honestly THE perfect setting.

An intimate gathering of their most precious friends and family, Steve Young playing acoustic guitar and Fancy Flutes serving oodles of fizz from their very cool Valentina! Plus a wave of summer sun basked the guests as well all enjoyed one of the best outdoor ceremonies I've been to. Heaven!

Here's a few frames from the day :D

The Boat House Wedding Photography // Leanne + Shaun https://www.realitypaused.com/blog/2017/11/the-boat-house-wedding-photography---leanne-shaun

"Thanks for the photos - the slideshow is absolutely amazing and the pictures are incredible.  We're so glad you were both part of our day. You've both been amazing!"

Well, what can I say to top that? What. A. Day. I mean, I don’t know about the guests, but it was pretty epic for us! Tears, laughter, cool beards, singing waiters, tequila slammers (that make you pull all sorts of faces) and, at the heart of it all, an awful lot of love.

Whilst the day was great from beginning to end, I’d be lying if I didn’t mention my favourite part – the singing waiters (http://thebestsingingwaiters.com/).

Only Leanne, Shaun, Kristian and I knew about this treat. At the end of the speeches two of the chaps who had been serving dinner and drinks announced an “off the cuff toast,” only then to burst into a full blown set of covers that got everyone dancing their dinner away – a set that would have made Bruno Mars and Van Morrison green with envy. I’ve never seen anything like it!

A serious temptation to bust out a few shapes instead of taking photos. Take a look at their Facebook page – talented entertainment well worth considering

Anyway…here’s a few frames from Leanne and Shaun’s wonderful day. Enjoy!
